Welcome to the 3rd Annual Moncton
Highland Games
This year's event promises to be even better, with the games now extending to a two-day event that includes an even wider variety of events certain to appeal to all.
Highland Games originated among the Scots' Celtic ancestors and became a customary part of their life.
Events such as tossing the caber and putting the stone, and competitions in playing bagpipes and Highland dancing formed the core of the festivities, along with footraces, wrestling and tug-o'-war, and novelty events such as three-legged races or the Best-Dressed Highlander competition.
Emigration from Scotland dispersed the Highland Games and brought them to North America (where they are often referred to as the Caledonian Games.Given the influence of SCOTS in Canadian history, it is not surprising that their Highland Games have flourished.

Oral tradition holds that some version of Highland Games has been in existence within the Celtic/Gaelic Community since before the dawn of Christianity. During the reign of King Malcolm III Canmore (1058-1093, a fairly fat meadowland (the Brae O'Mar) along the River Dee was used for a royal contest to find the swiftest and strongest man in the kingdom with the necessary stamina to carry Malcolm's messages across the land. Ten Centuries later, our own Moncton Highland Games still holds true to these same tenants. |
The skirll of the pipes announces to all within earshot that the annual Celtic competitions are again about to take place.
In this but our third year we are honored to play host to the Canadian National Scottish Heavy events.
Ten of Canada's best "Heavy Events" competitors will vie for the "Canadian Champion" title.
Amongst the excitement of these events you will still find all the usual competitions and attractions that make the "Games" a truly unique experience to regular and first timer alike.
So if ye ha a mind tae experience all things Scottish, then hike up yer kilt, tighten your gillies, set your tam at a rakish tilt and join us 'a the games.
